Christmas Ads 2017: Our Top 5 Sing-A-Longs

This year may very well spell the end for John Lewis’ domination of Christmas commercials. Because while it was trendy to play melancholy Tug O’ War with our heartstrings for the last couple of years, most ads have now changed their tune. Literally. Our spirits have been raised with some good old sing-a-longs. But JL continues to smatter us with nonsensical schmaltz. Oh well, here are our top five sing-songs.

Sainsbury’s – Every Bit of Christmas

We can always trust Sainsbury’s to show us real people (with a celeb or two mixed in for good measure). And since the current X Factor viewing figures show no sign of dwindling, now is the perfect time for an original and catchy sing-a-long, with a rap. We challenge you not to nod your head and tap your toes.https://youtu.be/WU50dLLy7Cw

Amazon – Give

There are few brands that could get away with anthropomorphising not their product, but their packaging. And Amazon’s one of them. But how do you make it Christmassy? Three words. Jolly, singing boxes. And they work. Their jolliness is infectious.https://youtu.be/H9SCZwh8Tvg

Asda – Best. Christmas. Ever.

When I first saw this one, I was not happy. But that’s because it aired on TV in October – way too early! Looking at it again, though, this is what it’d look like if Wes Anderson took on Willy Wonker’s Chocolate Factory. There’s a real charm to it. And the song’s a classic sing-a-long too.https://youtu.be/Rd9wKCy1pAE

T.K. Maxx – A White Christmas

Do these guys know how to make a Christmas ad or what? Damn right they do. That’s why they’ve made it to the list again. Their down-to-earth humour is downright fun. It’s for the people. And with Bill Nighy’s voiceover making us all think of Love Actually, it’s Christmas on a plate.https://youtu.be/bdD14rw1hr0

House of Frasier – Bring Merry Back

Whenever two people turn up to work wearing the same outfit, one of them’s inevitably more stylish. Well, that’s what’s happened with House of Frasier and Boots this year. Both focus on the relationship between sisters, but one makes us want to sing and the other’s still trying to make us cry. So we gave it the boot.https://youtu.be/2PvPqn4dSYc
